What Makes Single-Ingredient Spices Better

By T.O.H.S.

Walk down the spice aisle of any grocery store and flip a bottle over. You'll find ingredient lists that read like chemistry experiments: silicon dioxide, calcium silicate, "natural flavors," and a host of anti-caking agents. Now pick up The 'Original' Habanero Shaker. The ingredient list? Habanero peppers. That's it.

Single-ingredient spices deliver something blends never can: honesty. When there's only one ingredient, you taste exactly what the plant produced. No fillers diluting the flavor. No salt masking poor-quality peppers. No sugar softening the heat to make a mediocre pepper seem palatable.

There's a practical benefit too. With a single-ingredient spice, you control the seasoning. Want salt? Add your own, exactly how much you like. Watching sodium? No problem — there's none hiding in your spice. Following a keto, vegan, or elimination diet? One ingredient means zero guesswork.

The food industry uses blends for a reason: they're cheaper to produce. Bulk fillers like salt and maltodextrin cost a fraction of what real peppers do. A "habanero seasoning" might contain more garlic powder and salt than actual habanero. You're paying habanero prices for a salt-heavy blend.

Joel Friant started The 'Original' Habanero Shaker in 1995 with a simple belief: the habanero pepper is extraordinary enough to stand on its own. Thirty years later, that belief hasn't changed — and neither has the ingredient list.
