The Only Ingredient List That Matters: 100% Habanero

By T.O.H.S.

Pick up any spice blend at the grocery store and count the ingredients. Five? Ten? Twenty? Now ask yourself: do you know what all of those ingredients do? Silicon dioxide is an anti-caking agent. Maltodextrin is a cheap filler derived from corn starch. "Natural flavors" is a catch-all term that could mean almost anything. These additives aren't there for your benefit — they're there to make production cheaper and shelf life longer.

The 'Original' Habanero Shaker takes a different approach: one ingredient. Habanero peppers. Dehydrated and crushed into flakes. Nothing added, nothing removed. It's the kind of radical simplicity that shouldn't feel radical at all — but in today's food landscape, it does.

For people managing dietary restrictions, a single-ingredient product is a quiet miracle. No hidden sodium for those watching salt intake. No sugar or sweeteners for diabetics or keto followers. No gluten, dairy, soy, or nuts for allergy sufferers. No mysterious "natural flavors" for people with sensitivities they're still trying to pin down. One ingredient means one thing to check, and it's a vegetable.

There's a flavor argument too. When you add pure habanero to a dish, you're adding habanero — its fruity sweetness, its slow-building heat, its smoky complexity. When you add a "habanero blend," you're adding salt, garlic, onion, and whatever else is in the mix, with a whisper of habanero along for the ride. The difference isn't subtle. It's the difference between hearing a soloist and hearing a crowd.

Joel Friant has been asked a thousand times why he doesn't add garlic, or lime, or smoked paprika to the shaker. The answer is always the same: because then it wouldn't be a habanero shaker. It would be a seasoning blend with a habanero label. The whole point is to let the pepper speak for itself — and after 30 years, it still has plenty to say.
