The Clean Spice Buyer's Guide: No Salt, No Sugar, No Compromise

By T.O.H.S.

You meal prep. You read nutrition labels on everything from yogurt to bread. But when was the last time you scrutinized your spice rack? For most health-conscious eaters, spices are a blind spot — and the food industry knows it. Hidden sodium, added sugars, anti-caking agents, and mystery "natural flavors" are standard in most seasoning blends. They're not listed on the front of the bottle, and they add up fast.

Building a clean spice collection starts with a simple rule: single-ingredient spices over blends. Buy pure garlic powder, not garlic salt. Buy pure cumin, not "taco seasoning." Buy pure habanero flakes, not "hot pepper blend." When each jar contains one ingredient, you control exactly what goes into your food. No surprises, no hidden sodium, no unpronounceable additives.

Watch for common offenders hiding in plain sight. "Seasoned salt" is mostly salt. "Lemon pepper" is mostly salt and sugar. "Italian seasoning" often contains silicon dioxide and calcium silicate. Even single-ingredient spices can be adulterated — some ground cinnamon products have been found to contain added fillers. The defense is always the same: read the ingredient list, not just the product name.

The practical benefits of a clean spice rack go beyond nutrition labels. When you cook with single-ingredient spices, you develop a better palate. You learn what cumin actually tastes like on its own, how smoked paprika differs from sweet, how habanero's fruity heat is nothing like cayenne's sharp bite. This knowledge makes you a better cook because you're building flavor intentionally rather than dumping a pre-mixed blend and hoping for the best.

The 'Original' Habanero Shaker was clean before "clean label" was a marketing term. One ingredient, no compromise, since 1995. It sits perfectly in a spice rack built on the same philosophy: real ingredients, nothing else. Start reading your spice labels the way you read your food labels. You might be surprised — and motivated to make some swaps.
